INNOVATIVE WAYS OF LEARNING AND TEACHING HISTORY

Through this project, our aim is to make history lessons more involving and motivating for the students. Together with having traditional classes at school, we would like students and teachers to actively experience what they are learning and teaching about. Here are the ideas we are putting into practice, which we think will greatly benefit to understanding history better:

  1. Student-to-student lessons, prepared by and run by students themselves (supervised by teachers). Students, after taking part in project activities, prepare the lessons and share their knowledge with their peers, as follow-up activities.
  2. More research on one’s own, using authentic sources, e.g. in the archives, during interviews, meetings and in museums.
  3. Skype sessions, e.g. with Canadian students - sharing knowledge and experience makes students be more involved in what they do. As a result, they remember things much better.
  4. Regular cooperation between teachers, both in their own countries through the network of history teachers and internationally.
  5. Using materials during classes. The products created by the project participants need to be used in real life. The materials should also be shared with libraries, museums, other schools and institutions.
  6. Using modern technologies to make work more efficient, e.g. creating a magazine jilster.com, sharing information on pbworks or etwinning Twin Space, making websites on weebly.com.
  7. Carrying out interviews, meetings with people directly involved in the events covered by the project. Further evaluation and drawing conclusions.

All the above ideas are implemented in „The Future of History” project run by Piotr Skarga’s L.O. in Grojec and Jan van Brabant College in Helmond.
